Vacuum at Least Once a Week

Rotate the Rug Every Few Months

If you leave the rug in the same position, then sooner or later it will change because of the foot traffic and furniture on the rug. It will compact the carpet and have all the fibers face one general direction. To prevent that, every few months you should lift all the furniture and rotate the rug at least 90 degrees. We recommend doing this at least every six months, but once again, doing it more frequently wouldn’t hurt.

Avoid Direct Sunlight

Sunlight can fade just about anything. If you leave something in direct sunlight, the colors will quickly fade. This is important to keep in mind for area rugs. If an area rug is laying in the sun consistently it will lose its color. In a few months, you’ll have a rug that looks many years old. However, outdoor rugs are much harder to fade via sunlight. If you need a rug in an area that sees the sun frequently, make sure to get an outdoor rug.

Spot Clean Stains As Soon As Possible

Stains get harder to clean the longer they sit. This is true with everything, but it’s important to remember when thinking about area rugs. If something that could stain the area rug drops on it, it needs cleaning as soon as possible. Solid staining things, like food, need picking up first. Then, blot the stain with paper towels to soak up any liquid. Make sure not to scrub the stain, as that can just rub the stain deeper into the rug’s fibers.
